For all the orientalist interest in "sefardic" Jews (a category in which they lump together people from Morrocco to Bukhara, many American Jews today probably share the impressions cited by Derek. I recently took part in a trip with a group of 19-21-year-old Jewish American undergraduates to Jerusalem and other parts of Israel. All around them were Jews from the 4 corners of the earth - i.e., from Poland to Ethiopia, from Italy to Yemen - and of every appearance imaginable. It was bizarre to hear one of the students on the trip say another student "does not look Jewish."

BTW, I think Seinfeld is half-Halabi (Jews from Aleppo, Syria), and half-Hungarian-Jewish.Amoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03465114506715277544noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24622549.post-1152556297799385212006-07-10T11:31:00.000-07:002006-07-10T11:31:00.000-07:00Well, all I have to say is big up Derek for being ...Well, all I have to say is big up Derek for being one well-rounded, socially active, intellectual engineer!J.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13210829547141285116noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24622549.post-1152553474250819342006-07-10T10:44:00.000-07:002006-07-10T10:44:00.000-07:00First I have to confirm that unfortunately English...First I have to confirm that unfortunately English language journalism referring to middle eastern Jews DO need to preface their pieces with an introduction to the sizable Jewish population from the middle east. In America even educated people can only imagine "Jews" as the "white" people we see on Seinfeld and walking around in New York City. This is reinforced by (or perhaps reinforces) a post-colonial perspective of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that is ubiquitous throughout the Left.

Secondly, I just want to say that it was only after conversations with you and Amos, as well as a little bit of dabbling in academic history myself that I ever considered identity (national, ethnic, racial, linguistic) as a construct. Yeah, obviously we're all human blah blah MLK Stevie Wonder Jesus Christ etc... but still identity is still something that has to come from somewhere and anyone who is really interested in learning about current events should not be afraid to delve into the history and evolution of an identity, especially when people are discriminating, dying and killing in the name of it.

Does that make any sense?

Basically,

Big up yourself John!
Big up yourself Academic History!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
