Psychotic Sermons

Here's a Friday sermon recently broadcasted on Palestinian Authority TV. It's one of the latest installments from MEMRI (Middle East Media Research Institute), a group that among other things translates feeds from Arabic-language television into English. I suppose we've gotten used to things like this, but somehow they never fail to shock me...

It still seems unbelievable. Totally contradictory too. On the one hand, he highlights all the bad things that various people have done to the Jews - the argument being that they deserved it. On the other, he says that the Jews have inflated their suffering. He acknowledges that the Nazis committed crimes and that they killed millions, but then he blames the Jews and again negates the numbers.

I can't imagine that any of these guys actually BELIEVE half of the things they say. This is a great website for watching Arab and Iranian media(http://www.memritv.org/), and whenever I check it out the commentators and interviewees seem to just be saying things they think will help their cause, without really caring whether or not its true. They obviously feel very passionately about the end goal of their argument and are convinced that it is in itself true. So it's as if they can't be bothered to PROVE to you that the examples they are giving are true. It's common amongst right wing pundits in the US, but not nearly as much as I have seen in the Arab media.

For a great example of what I'm talking about check out the "Dialogue" between Danish and Arab students. There is a translator so in some instances the Arab students debate about how things should be translated because the accusations one of them has made is a little much. It's sort of comical.

I'm having trouble getting the link right now but check out the archives for "Danish Students are scolded about the term 'Middle East'" or something like that.
